Join us for a guided tour of Würzburg and discover the city’s rich history, architectural landmarks, and vibrant present-day culture on Wendsday, starting 4:30 pm at the conference venue.
Located on the river Main in the heart of Franconia, Würzburg has a history stretching back more than 1,300 years. The city became an important ecclesiastical and political centre under the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, whose legacy is reflected in landmarks such as the Marienberg Fortress, the Würzburg Residence, and the Old Main Bridge.
On 16 March 1945, during the final months of the Second World War, Würzburg was devastated by a major air raid. The historic city centre was almost completely destroyed, approximately 5,000 people lost their lives, and many of the city’s most important buildings were severely damaged. The Würzburg Residence, for example, lost nearly all of its roofs, wooden ceilings, and floors, while its stone-vaulted rooms survived the fire largely intact.
After the war, Würzburg was rebuilt in several stages. The reconstruction combined the restoration of important historic monuments with modern solutions for housing, infrastructure, and public buildings. In many parts of the city, the traditional street layout and characteristic architectural elements were retained, allowing Würzburg’s historic identity to re-emerge while creating a modern city for its residents. The reconstruction was largely completed by around 1970.
Today, Würzburg is a popular tourist destination known for its historic landmarks, cultural heritage, picturesque streets, and Franconian atmosphere. The tour will introduce participants to some of the city’s main sights and offer an enjoyable glimpse into Würzburg’s history and character.
